UNTITLED. Contemporary Art Fair, is a satellite to the contemporary art fair Art Basel, Miami Beach, FL. These photographs document the first three days of UNTITLED.’s construction in 2013, up until the floor being assembled. The photographic essay was conceived of as an artist’ publication in reference to Sol Lewitt’s, Photo Grids (1977), and it was distributed as a takeaway during the fair itself.
For years I worked as a staff photographer in the trade show and convention industry. I’d travel around the country to different events making highly deadpan photographs that depicted enthusiastic and record breaking crowds, people interacting over new products, booth displays and various related promotional events. It was a way to support myself to make art. Years later I exhibited my own work at a contemporary art fair and realized it was the same culture I’d experienced years before — not far off from the Meat and Dairy Convention.
