Negative Impressions

Negative Impressions, includes photographs from two separate yet related series that I started in 2011.

In one, I began a project with members of the “Transgender and Transsexuals On The Move,” advocacy group in San Juan, Puerto Rico. My work bears witness to the high rates of violence that this community endures but it is also about the time and interactions that I have with Sophia and Tatiana, my hosts. We traveled together around the island to visit sites where crimes occurred, as well as to places holding personal and symbolic places for the crime victims and for the Transgender community. My St. Vincent’s Hospital, Greenwich Village, NYC series developed through a chance encounter outside this now-closed historic site, a former epicenter of the AIDS crisis. There, I met Eva, a coroner at St. Vincent’s and, before that, a mortician. Eva is a conduit for my desire to connect with the pain of those who suffered.
